Sing to Improve Speech

This is a technique that I learned about just by trying. A student with very little speech demonstrated a very short attention span for regular work (Math and Language Arts). But I noticed that he showed a lot of interest in the Music class, and was able to focus and stay on task for almost the entire period of time (about thirty minutes). He was able to sit quietly and listen actively. From his body language, I was able to tell that he was deeply enjoying the music even without singing or participating.

One day the Music teacher introduced a new song that came with a story. The pictures in the book fascinated the little boy. He quickly and independently grasped the melody. Day after day he started to utter harmoniously the words of this song in a melodious sound. He was singing to himself, but he wouldn’t sing out loud.

I work with an 8yo autistic boy. When I started with him 3 years ago he did not speak . I noticed he liked music so I would sing instructions to him and before long he would repeat the words.e.g I would sing “it’s mat time” and then ask him what time is it and he would answer “mat time”. I began to use this technique alot. His speech has improved tremendously.
