A rescent research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison relates the age at diagnosis to the specific symptoms.
Some symptoms/signs are pertinant to young age like the repetive behavior and poor verbal skills. In this case the diagnosis can happen at an early age. Other symptoms/signs start to manifest as the development progresses. For example children with deficit in conversational ability, idiosyncratic (distinctive or individual) speech and relating to peers are more likely to be diagnosed at a later age.

Diversity in symptoms/signs leads to a diversity of diagnosis age.
That might be one of the reasons behind missing the opportunity of early diagnosis. Early screening can catch many of the cases that go undiagnosed until later on after school-age.
It is never enough to emphasize the importance of early screening/diagnosis. Early intervention can change the course of the child’s development. autism-tips.com/?p=1251
