The Combo Class vs. Special Day Class

A creative, compassionate teacher decided to call the buddies coming from SDC (Special Day Class) to join her class the Combo Class.

She has actually been very factual by inventing this name. In SDC there is actually at least two grade levels combined in one class. Given the small number in each program, schools cannot afford an individual class for a small group of 3, 4, or 5 students. The average size of a SDC is 8 to 12 students depending on the severity and the functioning level.

Besides, this how we call the combined classes anyway in regular education.

I believe that this is a brilliant idea that deserves to be generalized in mainstream classes. Most of the time, depending on the awareness of the students, special needs students are stigmatized when they go to mainstream classes. Teachers are always doing their best to raise awareness and educate their students to treat their peers from SDC with respect and kindness. But still some young children cannot always handle and accept the “different not less” students as part of the education system.

Parents also play a very important role in educating their children about special needs children. They should encourage them to interact and communicate with them.
